Sex sells, so it isn’t really that uncommon for companies to invest a whole ton of cash into sex education TV shows and movies. Netflix is a huge investor in this type of programming.

On this page, we figured we would take a little bit of time to go through what is regarded as some of the best sex education Netflix movies & TV series. Some of these you may have heard of, others not quite so much.

Do bear in mind that not all of these are strictly Netflix shows. While they may be on Netflix at the time of writing, they could disappear at any moment. Thankfully, the internet has resulted in these shows not being all that difficult to track down.

Special

Special is a Netflix TV show that has partially been based on a true story. This show features a gay man that suffers from cerebral palsy. He has decided that he no longer wants to be limited by his disability, so he goes out there and explores the world of sex.

While Special is marketed as a comedy show, it is fair to say that there is a whole lot more than comedy here. It is an endearing look at the world of sex through the eyes of somebody that most of us probably cannot relate to. We suppose that a lot of people are going to be picking up a whole lot of lessons here about how disabled people go out there and seek sexual relations.

Please Like Me

Please Like Me is a TV show that started out in Australia, but it wasn’t long before the Americans want to pick it up and add to all manner of different services. Do bear in mind that this show is probably going to end up tugging on your heartstrings quite a bit. you see, it is all based on the story of a man that discovers that he is gay.

He ends up dumping his girlfriend and begins to live with his suicidal mom. As you can probably guess, something happens with that. The rest of the show is focused on somebody exploring their newfound sexuality. The show has been written as naturally as possible and it is meant to appeal to teenagers.

Trinkets

This is a teen drama. The sex education part of the TV show do take somewhat of a backseat to the rest of the plot. it is about a secret group of friends who all love shoplifting. However, they are in different cliques at school, so they do not really let their names be associated with one another.

Of course, in secret, they are more than happy to help each other out with the problems that they have in their day-to-day life. This is a show that is purely focused on the teen market, so do expect to see a lot of issues discussed that purely focus on teenagers and their days in High School.

Awkward

This is a TV show that was recently canceled, but you still have five seasons to enjoy on Netflix, so it isn’t that bad! In Awkward, you will follow the life of a teenager who her friends believe she tried to commit suicide. It didn’t happen, but people believe it did.

This lass runs a blog, and a lot of the story is her focused on her blog, chatting about her life, mostly in relation to boys and her love life. While it is probably not going to be the most gripping story that you have ever seen in your life, it is going to be enough for those that want a lazy weekend of binging a Netflix comedy TV show that involves a bit of sex education.

Everything Sucks

We seem to recall Everything Sucks generating a little bit of controversy at the time. This show is set in a High School in the 1990s. The main character is a teenage girl that is starting to discover her sexuality. There are masturbation scenes, lesbian kisses, the works.

We suppose that it does try and teach people that these issues are 100% fine to be dealing with when you are a teenager. The show was cancelled after a series, but with Oasis and Spin Doctors forming a major part of the soundtrack, we are sure that most people are probably going to enjoy watching it, if only for the music alone.

The End of the F…Ing World

The End of the F…Ing World is a British TV show that was purchased by Netflix. It is based upon a comic book of the same name. The show is meant to be very Bonnie & Clyde, with a couple of changes. The lad in the show wants to murder somebody, so he takes the weird girl on school on a road trip.

Cue all sorts of weird stuff that changes their life. Rape is a major part of the story, as well as a guy starting to open up and become somebody different to who he thought he was. The show has attracted critical acclaim, and we are 100% positive that you will enjoy it too.

Easy

Easy is meant to be an episodic show, with each episode focusing on a different person. It is a comedy-drama show that, mostly, touches upon the idea of relationships, with a bit of sex thrown in for good measure. One of the things that we love about Easy is that the interpretation of Love in the show is incredibly modern.

It doesn’t dress up the idea of love to be this crazy thing that is going to make you feel oh so special once it happens to you. It takes you through the trials and tribulations of decisions that you make while you are in love. We feel that most people would probably love this show.

Lovesick

Lovesick is another British TV show that was purchased by Netflix. This show is very much a comedy. The early seasons focus on a guy getting a sexual disease and having to inform countless sexual partners of the disease that he has.

Over time, the story expands into a comedy about love and relationships. Of course, we know that British sitcoms are probably not going to be for everybody, but do give it a go. There is a reason why Netflix did decide to purchase this show so they could stick it up on their platform.

She’s Gotta Have It

Back in the 1980s, Spike Lee directed a revolutionary film called ‘She’s Gotta Have It’. This TV show on Netflix is the TV version of it. This show is actually the very first show on this list that deals with Black issues and their love life.

This story goes heavily into dealing with open relationships, racism, etc. Sadly, despite it receiving critical acclaim, it was never quite able to gain a following on Netflix. It was canceled after a couple of seasons, but they are still up on the platform for you to enjoy.

Fresh Meat

We have yet another British TV show that was picked up by Netflix. In this show, you get to follow the lives of a few housemates at university. These people couldn’t possibly be any different from one another, but it isn’t long before they start to bond.

Since this is set during university, you can expect there to be a lot of sex, drug use, people exploring their sexuality, etc. It is a comedy too, so you will also be able to enjoy or of the most hilarious shows that you are ever going to see on TV. Well, at least we think it is.

Wanderlust

This is a British BBC TV series that was picked up by Netflix. It is a drama series that does deal with things in a slightly heavier way than some of the other shows that we have discussed on this page. It deals with suicide, and divorce. Oh, and affairs, death, open relationships, etc.

There are only six episodes of the show, which means that it probably isn’t going to take that much effort for you to get through it. While it didn’t achieve the best reviews in the world, it certainly is a show that we enjoyed. This is why we have decided to include it on this list. We reckon that if you are on the older side of things, you will be able to enjoy the messages in the show.

Skins

Yep. More British TV shows. We reckon that this is because the British more likely to be open about sex on television than the Americans. Skins is an anthology series with each season focusing on a different group of teenage friends. It is a drama, with a dash of comedy added in for good measure.

However, just because it is a comedy, it doesn’t mean that you are going to be laughing all the time. Oh no. you see, the thing with Skins is that it can tackle some damn heavy subjects in the show. This includes death, rape, suicide, drugs, mental illness, etc. etc. This is one of our favorite TV shows of all time, so you should probably check it out.

Big Mouth

Big Mouth is an animated TV comedy that has generated a lot of controversies, although we aren’t quite sure why. This animated show is about kids going through puberty. It is carried out in an exceedingly lighthearted manner, but you will be surprised at how accurate a lot of the information can be.

Think along the lines of discussion about masturbation, body image, first period, pubes, homosexuality, etc. All of it comes with the unique brand of humor that Nick Kroll is known for. We suggest that you check out at least the first season of the show. The second season is somewhat funny, but the first season is really where it is.

Derry Girls

Derry Girls is a comedy, but it goes much deeper than that. It is based on a group of Irish girls attending school in Ireland (as you can probably guess). The show is set during the height of the Irish troubles i.e. terrorism. It goes through the story of living during this pivotal point of world history.

While the actual sex education part is kept to the minimum, mostly dealing with lesbianism in a Catholic society, the show is fantastic from start to finish. It is one of those shows that you absolutely have to check out. Although, if you are not up to date with your Irish accents, then you may want to turn on your subtitles otherwise you won’t have a clue what is going on.

A.P. Bio

This comedy is a show set in a High School. Although it is not really going to be heavy on the sex education side of things. However, it is a pretty hilarious comedy that deals with funny relationships and stuff. However, the comedy is pretty much going to be the main focus. This means smart kids being educated and getting into all sorts of shenanigans.

We suggest that you check out at least a couple of episodes. The vast majority of people that we have recommended this show to seem to have loved it, so it is worth checking out for that reason alone! Obviously, it being on Netflix makes it easy for you to be able to watch.

Freaks and Geeks

Freaks and Geeks is one of those TV shows that people feel was canceled well before its time. It is a comedy show set in the 80s and follows a group of teenagers. There are some pretty damn big names featured in the show too.

This was before they were big. So, think along the lines of James Franco, etc. Obviously, since the show is going to be set in a High School, there are relationships and sex that needs to be discussed. Although, you probably will want to bear in mind that because it was cancelled too early, there were not actually all that many episodes that you are able to watch.

Christiane Amanpour: Sex & Love Around The World

This is a show that you may actually struggle to find on some Netflix services. This is because it is a CNN documentary. A multi-part documentary, in fact. In this show, Christiane Amanpour tours around the world looking at the attitudes towards sex in a variety of different countries.

This is actually one of the only shows on this list where the main focus of everything is actually the sex education. You will learn how difficult cultures deal with everything related to sex, marriage, etc. etc. it is a real eye-opening show, so if you are interested in a variety of different cultures, then we absolutely suggest that you give it a watch.

The Half of It

This is the first movie on this list, and it was released in 2020. This is a coming of age film, so you know what that means. The typical story of a group of friends really discovering who they are. With a whopping 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is actually one of the highest-rated movies currently featured on Netflix.

Well, at least from the movies that Netflix has produced. It is going to tug at your heartstrings every so often. However, we still feel that it is going to make you smile too. It really is a brilliant movie.

Sex Education (Series)

Sex Education is a show that stars the absolutely beautiful Gillian Anderson. In this show, she plays the role of a sex therapist. She has a son that is pretty much well…he certainly isn’t get laid all that often. Her son picks up on a couple of skills from his mum, though. It isn’t long before he is providing people with sex therapy at school. Cue all sorts of shenanigans.

This British TV show has managed to achieve critical acclaim. It has allowed people to discuss sex a bit easier. Sex Education has also gone into discussions about rape, transgenderism, homosexuality, erectile dysfunction, etc. so, they certainly leave no stone unturned when it comes to actually teaching you about sex. The whole show seems pretty damn realistic too.

All The Bright Places

And we are going to wrap up with another movie. This one is based on a book of the same name. This is a romantic drama, so we do not expect it to be exciting to everybody out there. It is also heavily focused on teens. However, it is a good movie. Not only does it deal with romance, but it deals with mental illness, depression, guilt, and how bad it can be to lose a close family member.

While it certainly is nowhere near being one of the highest-rated movies on Netflix, a lot of people do love it. We have found that it tends to work better for teens than adults, so if you are a teen looking for sex education movies on Netflix, then check it out, we guess.
